New Dell MP3 Players and Music Service
In a surprising move that shouldn't be all that surprising, Dell has decided to take the plunge into the MP3 player market. Dell plans to release an MP3 player as early as September that has a small screen (comparable to the iPod Nano) and a scroll wheel.
Previously, Dell only dabbled in the MP3 player market. You may remember the DJ Ditty and other Dell MP3 gadgets between 2003 and 2006. If you don't remember them then the name DJ Ditty should give you some idea of how successful they were.
How many times have you heard someone say, "I'm almost ready to go, let me just grab my Ditty"?
Dell gave up on the previous MP3 players in 2006 but is coming around for a second chance, and this time they are upping the ante by creating a music download service and the software to interface with it.
If it sounds like Dell is trying to copy Apple, it is. The computer giant wants to expand its consumer market reach, just as Apple did by entering the music business with the iPod and iTunes. And Dell isn't the only one. We already reported that Nokia is planning a similar attack on Apple's market share by starting a music download service for its MP3-capable phones.
It's just that Dell and Nokia are seven years late to the game.
