Turn On, Zune in, Drop Out: The Sudden Rise in Zune Publicity
With an ersatz victory this summer in the "Mojave Experiment," Microsoft is looking through its second prize (and second rate) products for another attempt at success.Enter Zune.
Zune has been around for nearly two years, and in that time has barely managed to place a dent in the ever-expanding territory of Apple's iPod. Despite elaborate PR efforts, customization options and demographically specific limited editions, Zune has never been able to rise above the iPod's shadow until ... uh, now?
Recently, well placed and more likely, well paid for press releases, news leaks, blog posts and everything in between, have effectively created a hype around the upcoming release of the latest Zune incarnation. Though most hype is largely insubstantial to begin with, there seems to be even less than usual here, with no changes being made to appearance and memory size options increasing only slightly.
With the "Monopolist" bias that accumulated around Microsoft throughout the nineties finally eroding, Microsoft products like Zune may finally get a fair shot at success or fail once and for all.
